Advocacy

Port Macquarie Hastings is one of Australia’s most liveable and rapidly growing regions. With a population of over 92,650 (2025) and continued growth projected to exceed 100,000 within the next decade, our region is experiencing increasing demand for infrastructure, services and long-term investment.

Our Local Government Area spans more than 3,600km² and includes a mix of vibrant townships, coastal villages and rural communities. As the region continues to grow, so too does the need for essential infrastructure - particularly in transport, water and sewer, housing, and community facilities.

We play a critical role in advocating for this future. We work to ensure the voices of our community are heard across all levels of government and across key industries is essential, so that our region receives the investment, services, and support needed to thrive.

What is advocacy?

Advocacy is how Council represents the interests of our community beyond the services we directly deliver. It involves identifying key regional needs and working with other levels of government, business and community partners to influence decisions, attract funding and support outcomes that benefit our region.

While Council has direct responsibility for many local services, there are key areas like health, education, transport and community safety, where Council has a limited or no delivery role. In these cases, our role may be to advocate, partner or support in order to deliver the outcomes our community expects.

This includes issues such as the condition, capacity and safety of state-owned roads within our region. Although these roads fall outside Council’s control, they are critical to local transport, freight and emergency access. We work closely with Transport for NSW and other stakeholders to seek upgrades, maintenance and long-term planning that reflect current and future needs.

Our advocacy efforts are shaped by long-term planning and extensive engagement with the community. The most significant of these is our Community Strategic Plan – Imagine2050, which outlines our shared vision:

To become the most liveable, sustainable and innovative place in Australia.

How we advocate

We take a strategic, collaborative approach to advocacy, guided by evidence, planning and community priorities.

Council regularly engages with elected representatives and government agencies, prepares business cases and funding submissions, and builds strong partnerships with regional organisations and community groups.

We also use public platforms, such as media campaigns, community events, and formal invitations to government representatives - to raise the profile of key issues and opportunities in our region.
