Use of E-bikes and E-scooters

Electric bikes (e-bikes) and electric scooters (e-scooters) are becoming a popular way to get around, but it’s important everyone uses them lawfully, safely and responsibly.

Where you can ride

Under NSW laws, the rules depend on the type of device:

E-scooters:

  • It is currently illegal to ride privately owned e-scooters in public places (roads, footpaths, and shared paths) in NSW. However, you can ride a shared e-scooter in designated shared e-scooter trial sites, noting that no such sites currently exist within the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Government Area.

E-bikes:

  • You can use bicycles that meet the requirements for permitted e-bikes on public roads and road-related areas. The NSW Government will soon be changing the rules for e-bikes. Choose a bike that meets European Standard EN 15194 - it’s legal to ride now and in the future. Check for the EN 15194 mark or ask your retailer.

Safety tips for everyone

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Obey road rules and local signage
  • Keep your speed safe, especially in areas with pedestrians
  • Be aware of your surroundings, pedestrians have priority on shared paths.
