Repair and Reuse

Waste is often seen as unwanted or unusable material destined for disposal.

While some items must go to landfill due to limited alternatives, many still hold value and can be repaired, reused, recycled or recovered.

In line with Port Macquarie Hastings Council’s Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy, we’ve created a Repair Directory and Reuse Directory to help connect our community with local businesses and organisations that offer repair and reuse services.

Repair

The NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Waste Hierarchy identifies repairability and repair as high priorities, helping reduce waste and send less to landfill. By choosing repair, you’re supporting a more circular economy that keeps resources in use for longer.

Repairing an item can:

1. Save you money. In many cases, a simple repair can be more cost-effective than replacing an item.

2. Reduce waste and emissions. Repairing extends the life of products, conserving natural resources and reducing the environmental impact of manufacturing new goods.

3. Preserve sentimental value. Some items carry personal or community history that can’t be replaced. Repair keeps these stories alive.

4. Support local business. Choosing repair means supporting skilled local trades and keeping dollars in our local economy.

5. Create a more sustainable community. By repairing and reusing, you help build a community that values resources, reduces waste, and supports local solutions.

Look up the Repair Directory to find a wide range of local repair businesses.

Reuse

Funded by Midwaste, the Port Macquarie Reuse Directory links our community to businesses and organisations that find ways to reuse and repurpose items instead of throwing them away. The Port Macquarie Reuse Directory connects you with local op shops, second-hand stores and reuse and recycling options in your region.  Whether you're looking to donate or shop second-hand, our directory makes it easy to choose sustainable options. Explore the directory and find the perfect solution to keep your belongings in use and out of landfill.

Look up the Reuse Directory to find local reuse businesses and organisations.

Note: Businesses and organisations that provide repair or reuse in our local area are invited to add a listing to the directory.
