Council is progressing the Kindee Bridge rehabilitation project, following issues identified during planning for major maintenance and flood recovery works. Investigations are complete but identified more extensive timber replacement than had anticipated.
Detailed design is now underway to confirm the approach and will take a couple of months to ensure we can deliver, while minimising disruption during construction. The bridge remains open under temporary load limits, and no construction has commenced. Any future closures, restrictions or access changes will be confirmed once design and construction planning are finalised.
Kindee Bridge will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians when the Hastings River exceeds 1.7 metres (at the Kindee Bridge gauge).
Flooding at this location can occur quickly, which means closures may be required with little to no notice. Council will monitor weather forecasts, rainfall and river conditions to inform when closures are needed.
The latest river level information is available on the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) website.
Council will keep working with specialist contractors to progress the project. This includes finalising the design for the repair works, and planning the safety measures and site access needed to carry out the repairs safely.
The remediation design is nearing completion. Once it’s finalised, Council will move into the next stage of detailed planning for how the repair works will be delivered safely (including site access and safety arrangements). This stage is expected to take around two months.
Once both stages are complete, Council will be able to confirm:
Any impacts will be clearly communicated in advance.
Yes. A detour via Pipeclay Road remains open and should be used for vehicles over 3.5t or in the event of a closure at Kindee Bridge. Grading of Pipeclay Road is currently ongoing, and Council will continue to monitor its condition. However, as an unsealed road, it can deteriorate quickly after rainfall. We encourage all drivers to travel carefully and drive to conditions at all times.
Residents are encouraged to report any concerns to Customer Service on 6581 8111 so we can respond promptly.
In 2021 Council explored design options for a potential replacement bridge and engaged with the community, who supported a new structure immediately upstream. However, funding has not been sourced or allocated to progress the next stages of that project.
Council’s current focus is on planning and delivering the rehabilitation of the existing bridge.
Council will continue to provide updates through the project webpage, social media, and direct communication with impacted residents, especially if conditions change or further measures are required.
