The Fixing Country Bridges Program is a NSW Government initiative, enabling councils to replace timber bridges in poor condition and better connect regional and rural communities.
Port Macquarie Hastings Council has been successful in securing funding of $19.455m under round one of the program, to assist in the replacement of the following 13 high priority bridges across our LGA.
Project environmental approvals and design phase works for all bridges were completed in December 2022.
The program was delivered in two packages following engagement of suitable External Major Contractors as follows:
Construction phase works commenced in May 2023 with Logans Crossing Bridge (Package 1 Bridge - Highest priority).
Package 1 Structures were completed in October 2024 with the opening of King Creek Bridge to traffic being the final Major Bridge of 5 to be completed.
Package 2 Structures were completed in December 2023.
All bridges were completed in accordance with the timeframes outlined in the grant funding guidelines.
The replacement of these nominated bridges, with new concrete structures, has a range of community benefits including bringing these older structures up to current Australian Standards and providing greater resistance to flood damage including reduced return to service times following flooding inundation of these bridge crossings.
It will reduce long term maintenance costs to Council, and provide improved safety for pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists. It will also improve traffic flow and access for businesses and residents.
This project forms a significant part of Council's commitment to continue to deliver key road infrastructure, and connecting our communities.
