Fixing Country Bridges Program

Logans Crossing Bridge

The Fixing Country Bridges Program is a NSW Government initiative, enabling councils to replace timber bridges in poor condition and better connect regional and rural communities.

Port Macquarie Hastings Council has been successful in securing funding of $19.455m under round one of the program, to assist in the replacement of the following 13 high priority bridges across our LGA.

Planned Project Delivery

The program is being delivered in two packages. Project environmental approvals and design phase works for both of these packages was completed in December 2022.

Procurement processes for the engagement of suitable External Major Contractors for the two packages are now completed.

  • Package 1 - Major Bridges: Saunders Civilbuild P/L
  • Package 2 - Minor Bridges and Culverts: EIRE Constructions P/L

Construction phase works commenced in May 2023 with all programs works expected to be completed by mid 2024 (weather permitting) to meet the timeframes outlined in the funding guidelines.

Benefits of the bridge replacements

The replacement of these nominated bridges, with new concrete structures, has a range of community benefits including bringing these older structures up to current Australian Standards and providing greater resistance to flood damage including reduced return to service times following flooding inundation of these bridge crossings.

It will reduce long term maintenance costs to Council, and provide improved safety for pedestrians, vehicles and cyclists. It will also improve traffic flow and access for businesses and residents.

This project forms a significant part of Council's commitment to continue to deliver key road infrastructure, and connecting our communities.

We have now finalised the approvals process with Crown Lands and Essential Energy to relocate the overhead power lines currently in place over King Creek Bridge. This means we are now able to engage our specialist bridge construction contractors, Saunders Civilbuild to commence construction on April 8 2024. Our expected program duration remains 6 months, weather permitting.

We have heard community concerns regarding the intersection of King Creek Road and The Oxley Highway. We are currently working with our internal road crews to widen King Creek Road to improve ability to turn left onto the Oxley Highway prior to the closure of King Creek Bridge.

We will also monitor the traffic situation throughout the early stages of bridge closure and work alongside Transport for New South Wales as the asset owner of the Oxley Highway to install practical solutions if deemed necessary.

Emergency services, Australia Post and other service providers have been made aware of this project and will adjust their services accordingly.

We will continue to keep you informed via VMS boards near the work site and this website
