Koala Action Plan

Koalas continue to face threats of habitat loss, road strike, dog attacks and disease.

The PMHC Koala Action Plan(PDF, 4MB) aims to support koalas and their habitat through the implementation of realistic and practical actions at a local scale, while collaborating and advocating at a State level.

Port Macquarie has been identified as one of NSW’s 19 koala strongholds and Council is committed to maintaining and strengthening our koala population for generations to come.

Brief background

In 2018, Port Macquarie Hastings Council adopted the Koala Recovery Strategy(PDF, 3MB) as a result of deferring further consideration of the Coastal Koala Plan of Management (CKPoM).

In 2020, Council resolved to review the Koala Recovery Strategy instead and determined that the actions that could be delivered were to be redesigned and incorporated into Council’s Operational Plan, with a new Koala Action Plan to be developed.

In 2023, the Draft Koala Action Plan was opened to the public for consultation.

In February 2024, Council unanimously adopted the PMHC Koala Action Plan(PDF, 4MB) which delivers actions through four overarching themes:

  1. Regulatory

Population and habitat protection delivered through the PMHC Operational Plan & monitoring KPoM compliance

  2. Operational

Mitigation measures to protect koalas delivered through the PMHC Operational Plan & State funding initiatives

  3. Strategic

Future proofing through strategic land use planning and State funding initiatives

  4. Engage & Collaborate

Delivered through PMHC Operational Plan through supporting on-going community education, support of the Koala Hospital & state funding initiatives.

Protecting our koalas is a whole of community effort. We all need to be involved, whether through citizen science, monitoring your driving speed or supporting the ongoing conservation work.
