Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has closed Comboyne Road, effective immediately, in the interests of public safety due to structural issues below the road surface.

A geotechnical assessment undertaken on Tuesday identified the issues at the site of a major slip which originally occurred during the March Floods.

As Comboyne Road was severely compromised in the floods, Council has been undertaking regular checks to ensure the community’s safety.

An assessment conducted two weeks ago indicated the road was still safe to use, however following several weeks of rain Tuesday’s inspection has led to the discovery of major cracks in the road surface which were not previously evident.

This is a result of an expansion of the existing major slip. Council has now made the immediate decision to close the road to traffic between Stennetts Road and Hartys Creek Lane.

While emergency works are undertaken to fix the road, all traffic will be diverted via Lorne Road until further notice.

Council is in the process of engaging a contractor to complete short term repairs to re-open the road to single lane access. It is anticipated the emergency repair works will take anywhere from 3-6 weeks to complete, depending on weather conditions.

Council will increase maintenance work along Lorne Road, including regrading the unsealed portion of the road to ensure its safety with the increased traffic flow.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's Director of Infrastructure Dan Bylsma said Council continues to work on the long-term plan for the reconstruction of Comboyne Road.

“Following the flood event earlier this year, Council crews sustained an incredible effort to restore the immediate access route for the Comboyne community, while we commenced the process for the longer-term planning and design for the major reconstruction of the road,” he said.

“Plans for a complete rebuild are already underway and Council has begun the procurement process to engage contractors to undertake the longer term project.

“We appreciate this is a key access road for those living in Comboyne and the timing just before Christmas is not ideal. We are working to have the road opened as soon as possible to restore access for the community."

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is liaising with impacted residents and the surrounding community. Council will keep the community informed as we progress with the work.
