Wayne Richards sporting scholarship

The annual Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship provides financial assistance of $4,000 (paid in 4 quarterly instalments) to a Port Macquarie Hastings athlete participating at state or national level.

Applications open in August or September each year and winners are announced at the Port Macquarie Hastings Sports Awards in October. 

Before applying

Who can apply?

Applicants must be: 

  • Between 13 and 21 years of age at the time applications close
  • An Australian Citizen or have permanent resident status
  • A permanent resident of the Port Macquarie-Hastings local government area
  • Participating as an athlete in a sport endorsed by the relevant Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and recognised by the National Sporting Organisation (NSO).

Some sports are not recognised, so please check with your sporting organisation. For example, the following sports are not Australian Sports Commission recognised National Sporting Organisations:

  • Futsal
  • Oz tag
  • Cheerleading
  • Royal life saving
  • Surf life saving

How to apply

Applications for the Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship are now closed.

Choosing the recipient

Recipients are chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Achievement at a state, national or international level of competition in their chosen sport
  • Potential to further represent NSW or Australia in their chosen sport and have potential to achieve a sporting career
  • Sportsmanship in their chosen field
  • The potential to be an ambassador for the Port Macquarie-Hastings region
