The annual Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship provides financial assistance of $4,000 (paid in 4 quarterly instalments) to a Port Macquarie Hastings athlete participating at state or national level.
Applications open in August or September each year and winners are announced at the Port Macquarie Hastings Sports Awards in October.

Paralympian Ryley Batt is a former recipient of the Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship.
The scholarship was established as a tribute to the late former Mayor, Wayne Richards, who was a passionate supporter of youth and sport in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region. He was instrumental in the formation of the Mayor's Sporting Fund in 1999.
The scholarship was launched in 2004.
