Laurieton’s town centre is coming alive as a six-month program of activations and temporary changes will transform Seymour Street into a hub of activity and entertainment.

Proudly funded by the NSW Government through the Streets as Shared Spaces program, we have received $500,000 to deliver a trial project to create a vibrant, usable, and active space for locals and visitors within one block of Seymour Street, between Bold and Lake Streets.

The project, Switch on Seymour, will activate the corridor connecting the town centre with the Camden Haven River between September 2022 and March 2023. The site plan(PDF, 2MB) displays the plans for the upgrade.

Switch on Seymour looks to create exciting places to visit, stay, connect, and explore within the Laurieton town centre, adding to the town’s character, as well as boosting its economic and cultural profile. A focus will be on creating places to sit, meet and linger for both residents and visitors, and offer opportunities to discover and connect with the space differently, both day and night, in a pedestrian friendly space.

Expect to see new tree plantings and planting beds, seating, modular parklet structures, increased temporary lighting, water refill station, wayfinding and signage and public art installations.

Streets as shared spaces program

The NSW Government's Streets as Shared Spaces Program is designed to projects that test improvements to streets and public spaces.

Projects funded under this program, like Switch on Seymour look to:

  • make public spaces safer, more accessible, active, and increases footfall
  • drive connections with people and to place
  • foster innovation and collaboration with sectors and community
  • strengthen the amenity and economic vitality of a high street and surrounding area.

Seymour Street was chosen as the preferred location for this scheme as:

  • the location and orientation offers views to North Brother to the west, and the Camden Haven estuary to the east
  • the street section is just around the corner from Bold Street, the main commercial street
  • businesses will benefit from increased pedestrian traffic
  • Seymour Street was identified in the Laurieton Town Centre Master plan as a preferred location for a temporary streetscape upgrade.
