COVID-19 Recovery Working Group

We have established a COVID-19 Recovery Working Group which brings together community leaders from across the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Government Area in addition to teams from Council, to determine and plan how we successfully recover from the COVID-19 health crisis:

  • economically,
  • socially, and
  • culturally.

Working Group and Sub-Groups

The COVID-19 Recovery Working Group is Chaired by Council's General Manager with sub-groups which have beenestablished to focus on specific areas.

  • TOURISM: Chaired by Janette Hyde, President of the Greater Port Macquarie Tourism Association and Vice President of Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce. The Tourism Sub-Groups has a key focus on drawing back domestic tourists, incorporating hospitality, tourism operators and related businesses.
  • COMMUNITY WELLBEING: Chaired by Jane Evans, Adjunct Professor at Charles Sturt University (CSU), formerly Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD).  The Community Wellbeing group is focussed on community resilience, mental health, domestic and family violence, aged persons, persons with disability, indigenous community support, youth, vulnerable, volunteers and incorporating the key theme of creating a feeling of safety.
  • LEARNING: Chaired by Kate Wood-Foye, Director External Engagement at Charles Sturt University. This Working Group will oversee the progress of developing opportunities for vocational skills, university level courses, upskilling the local workforce, online learning, and developing skills required locally.
  • ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STEERING GROUP: This already existing group is Chaired by Councillor Rob Turner with key focus areas of:
    • Support for local business - for all industry sectors (including retail and hospitality) and issues such as procurement and support for local suppliers, cutting red tape, increasing outdoor dining and other business opportunities.
    • Capital works - reviewing current planned projects for 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 and what may be brought forward, along with considerations as to how we can build infrastructure that accommodates environmental and sustainability needs.

    • Township beautification - identifying potential projects for upgrades to streetscapes, landscape, and more.
  • CULTURAL STEERING GROUP: This is an already existing group Chaired by Councillor Rob Turner. The focus areas of the Cultural Steering Group: 

    • Arts, Culture and Creative Industries - bringing people back into the Port Macquarie-Hastings CBDs and townships. such as buskers, events, festivals, markets and how we support creative industries moving forward.

As the COVID-19 Recovery Working Group and each sub-working group progresses, we'll continue to update the community with specific milestones and delivery projects.
