Scheduled unsealed road maintenance programs

unsealed road grading

Council's unsealed road grading maintenance schedule is available to view in the tables below. Council is responsible for managing over 450km of unsealed road in our Local Government Area. The majority of these roads are graded every 12 months, with the more heavily trafficked roads graded every 6 months.

Four maintenance grading crews operate on a continual basis to manage these unsealed roads. This work mainly consists of grading the roadway to produce a consistent and even road surface, free from potholes and corrugations. Grading is also done with the aim of producing a sloped road surface to prevent water pooling on the road surface, which causes potholes or soft spots.

Why has there been a delay with grading my road?

On occasion there are circumstances outside our control that affects the grading program and results in delays to the planned grading schedule. These circumstances may include adverse weather conditions and other maintenance works requiring immediate attention. However, we remain dedicated to undertaking the grading works in a timely manner.

Successful road maintenance grading is dependent on weather. Grading works during and after wet weather causes damage to the road pavement, so maintenance grading starts again when the road pavement has sufficiently dried out.

It's important to note that we paused our grading schedule for a period of 3 months during high level water restrictions in late 2019/early 2020. This pause in our schedule has meant that we have had to readjust our program timing to regain our grading momentum and schedule.

How is an unsealed road graded?

A grader is used to clear gravel from the roadside edge drains, and trim the top layer of road gravel to produce an even road surface. Sometimes we may use a water cart to then spray the road surface and any loose gravel, which helps to achieve the desired compaction. A smooth drum roller is then used to compact the gravel. The grader may then do a final pass to trim any high spots.

Will I receive notification of when grading will occur on my road?

Generally, for normal maintenance grading activities, Council doesn't send out letters of notification to residents before starting work. Residents will be notified if road closures are required, however this rarely happens.

Water use in unsealed road grading

Water is essential in the use of unsealed road grading to bind the gravel material together effectively, and reduce the rate of natural road deterioration. We aim to use water points within 15km (round trip) of our grading sites so the road doesn’t dry out before we can compact the material with water. Where possible we fill up at the major creeks and rivers in accordance with legislation, however like many others at the moment, have found that many of our usual water points have dried up.

We’ve been using recycled water from the Dunbogan Waste Water Treatment Plant over the past few months, and in the future will also consider using recycled water from the Kew and Bonny Hills Plants, once upgrades are completed. Additionally we are also investigating licence conditions to allow the use of final effluent from the new Sewer Treatment Plants in Comboyne, Long Flat and Telegraph Point once construction is complete… and from the existing Wauchope Treatment Plant. The water gains from these plants might not change the situation drastically but it certainly assists us to minimise use of our town drinking water supplies as we understand that every drop counts.

We will continue to work with our community to deliver our unsealed road grading program whilst continuing our commitment to conserving water.
