Find out about Gertrude and Tristan and the fellow who live in Hollow Woods. This fantasy fiction is suitable for children 8-12 years old. 

 

Wendy Haynes has completed a Diploma in Creative Writing at Southern Cross University. Her writing focuses on middle-grade fantasy, historical, and contemporary stories for children, picture books, junior fiction, and YA.

Her first picture book Hayden’s Bedtime was published in March 2019. 

Her first book in The Door in The Woods series: Saving Hollow Woods, a middle-grade fantasy fiction, was published in 2020. Both books can also be found on the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge List.

The next book in the series, Apprentice of the Stones will be available at this launch.

She was a judge for the Port Writer’s In-house competition for the creative non-fiction category in 2018, and one of the judges of the fiction category in 2019. She was one of the judges for the CYA Competition for 2019 and a is currently the President of Port Writers Incorporated.

Wendy won first prize for her short story Going Nowhere, at Port Writers In-house competition 2018, and enjoys helping and motivating writers. She is available for school visits.

Who puts a door in a tree trunk?

Twelve-year-old orphans Gertrude and Tristan find themselves on a train heading for the countryside to live on a farm. Gertrude is worried her missing parents will never find her. Tristan sees the trip as one more adventure, which isn’t going to end well.

But when they discover a hidden door deep in the woods life on the farm soon takes a twist. Once inside the door they find themselves in Hollow Woods the land of the Elves. Mortar is the leader of the Elves and ruler of The Four Lands, where the Trolls, Goblins, and Dwarfs live.

Strange things start to happen which threaten the very existence of Hollow Woods. Can Gertrude and Tristan help save Hollow Woods from the Evil High Elf Folmar?

While practicing the ancient form of scrying with her ruby red stones, Gertrude views a goblin girl in the woods. Who is she? And why can Gertrude see her? Is there more trouble brewing in Hollow Woods? Join Gertrude and Tristan on another journey through the door in the woods. They soon learn the Evil High Elf Folmar has a plan that could start another civil war between the citizens of the Four Land – the Elves, Dwarfs, Goblins and the Trolls. But Gertrude’s new skills may help conquer Folmar once and for all.  Can they stop the war or are they too late?
