Explore the Legacy of the Goulds

Trace the remarkable journey of English ornithologist John Gould and his wife Elizabeth as they travelled across New South Wales in the 1800s on one of history's most significant birding expeditions. Their work led to the description and illustration of over 300 bird species that were new to science, including the Pied Butcherbird and the now extinct Paradise Parrot. This installation offers an astonishing glimpse into their dedication to documenting Australia's birdlife, a legacy that continues to inform contemporary conservation efforts.

First Nations Knowledge and Bird Conservation

The Goulds' work was deeply enriched by the guidance and knowledge of First Nations peoples, whose connection to Australia’s birds spans over 60,000 years. Birds hold a sacred place in First Nations cultures, featuring in songlines, ceremonies, and as spiritual totems. Understanding the significance of Australian birds from a First Nations perspective is crucial to preserving our natural heritage and ensuring a sustainable future for these fragile species.
