Youth Week Challenge 2020

We're looking for creative people who can think outside the box to enter our challenge and create an original artwork, poem song or App design! 

The Challenge begins 1 April 2020 and ends at 11:59pm AEST on 17 May 2020 and is open to young people aged 12 - 25 years living in Port Macquarie-Hastings region. 

What do I win and how do I enter?

There are $500 and $1000 cash prizes up for grabs for yourself and for your school. (If not a school student, you can choose a charity of your choice. Refer below.)

There are 4 categories to choose from:

1. ARTWORK

Create an original artwork in the form of a sculpture, painting or hanging artwork using recycled or clean waste materials that you can find lying around your home. The artwork needs to somehow include or reflect the theme of youth week; Speak up. Be involved. Get connected. Have fun.

Take a picture and add it to the entry form, tell us briefly about your artwork and click submit. Share it to your own social media accounts and add #pmhChallenge

The winner will receive $500 for themselves plus $500 for their school.

2. POETRY

Create an original poem using any form of poetry – rhyming, free verse, haiku etc…..that reflects the theme of youth week; Speak up. Be involved. Get connected. Have fun.

Take a picture and add it to the entry form and click submit. Share it to your own social media accounts and add #PMHChallenge

The winner will receive $500 for themselves plus $500 for their school.

3. SONG

Compose an original song with lyrics, no longer than 4 minutes, using any style of music you like. The song must include or connect to the theme of Youth Week; Speak up. Be involved. Get connected. Have fun.

Load up your song to your social media, add #PMHChallenge and send us the link to your song in our entry form and then click submit. 

The winner will receive $500 for themselves plus $500 for their school.

4. MOBILE APP

Design a high level mobile App concept/idea to digitally engage with youth. This App should allow youth to ‘Speak up. Be involved. Get connected. Have fun.’

The purpose of the mobile App would be to create a platform for youth to work together, share ideas and thoughts, share messages and pictures and find out about youth services in our community. The design you submit should include main functions, main features, who can access it, what makes it so unique and what sets it apart from other mobile Apps.

Note: You don't need to code the app, just provide your concept ideas on how the app functions.

The winner will receive $1000 for themselves plus $1000 for their school.

Can I enter in multiple categories?

YES! You can have one entry per category. Four chances to win! The Challenge is open to anyone who lives within the Port Macquarie-Hastings Local Government Area who is aged between 12-25 years of age. You can enter more than one category but can only have one entry per category.

How will entries be judged?

All categories will be judged on creativity, originality and quality – so get creative! Port Macquarie-Hastings Council will make the final decisions. 

What do winners receive?

Category 1 - Artwork

$500 for the winner and $500 for the school they attend at the time of submission to spend on art supplies (if the winner no longer attends school, they can elect a charity of their choice to receive the $500). The runner up will receive $250.

Category 2 - Poetry

$500 for the winner and $500 for the school they attend at the time of submission to spend on literature for the school library (if the winner no longer attends school, they can elect a charity of their choice to receive the $500). The runner up will receive $250.

Category 3 - Song

$500 for the winner and $500 for the school they attend at the time of submission to spend on musical equipment (if the winner no longer attends school, they can elect a charity of their choice to receive the $500). The runner up will receive $250.

Category 4 - Mobile App Design

$1000 for the winner and $1000 for the school they attend at the time of submission to spend on technology (if the winner no longer attends school, they can elect a charity of their choice to receive the $1000). The winner will also receive digital mentoring from a company selected by Council. The runner up will receive $500.

All entrants may receive recognition and prestige by having their creation chosen to be published online or possibly displayed for viewing by the public.

Is there anything else I should know?

  • If you’re under 18, remember to get permission from your parent or guardian before you enter. When filling in the online form, tick the ‘permission granted by parent’ box and then have your parent/guardian fill in the appropriate consent details before signing. Ensure your parent/guardian fills in the ‘additional’ consent form if your work features images or footage of yourself or any other identifiable child under the age of 18.
  • Please keep your original artwork or creation for a possible exhibition later in the year.
