Port Macquarie-Hastings Council (PMHC) commenced works in early January 2020 to upgrade the Reid Street, Diamond Head Road and The Boulevard intersection Dunbogan to improve local flood and evacuation access in the area. This involves raising these existing roads to a 1 in 20 year flood level. A section of the Beach to Beach footpath will be constructed with the road work. Some service relocation/ installation works will also be required. The project complements Stage 1B and 1C works which have already been completed.
Access to and from Dunbogan is poor during flood periods, with the main access road particularly susceptible to flooding, even in the early stages of such events. The proposal will result in an improvement in flood evacuation and will reduce the overall flood risk to the Dunbogan community by reducing the frequency of road closures during nuisance flood events. Raising the roads from Dunbogan to Laurieton will provide additional time for evacuation during more significant floods. Currently, evacuation via vehicle is not possible in even very minor flood events. The improved evacuation times will provide a benefit to hundreds of properties in the Dunbogan area.
This project is jointly funded by the NSW State Government under the OEH Floodplain Management Program. Council has received $1M in funding under the Floodplain Management Program with an additional $500,000 provide by Council.
Works are scheduled to be completed at the end of March 2020 weather permitting.
