In 2018 Port-Macquarie Hastings Council (Council) was successful in obtaining funding through the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund to upgrade Lighthouse Road from Matthew Flinders Drive to the Lighthouse including the car park at the base of Tacking Point Lighthouse.
On Wednesday 15th May, 2019 Council endorsed Eire Constructions as the successful tenderer and work is set to commence from mid-June, 2019.
The upgrade will include widening and resurfacing the road, kerb and guttering, car parking improvements, stormwater upgrades and the provision of a pedestrian footpath from Davis Crescent to the existing elevated platform, thereby improving safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
To reduce the overall construction duration and improve public safety, vehicular access to the Tacking Point Lighthouse lookout will not be available during the construction period and access to Davis Crescent will be restricted. All drivers are encouraged to follow traffic signage and instructions.
Pedestrian access to Tacking Point Lighthouse will be maintained via the staircase at the northern end of Lighthouse Beach and the Coastal Walk. Pedestrian access around Tacking Point Lighthouse will be limited to the eastern perimeter and the community is asked to follow all signage instructions and to exercise caution when visiting the area.
Work is expected to be completed by late September 2019 dependent on weather.
Council thanks the community for their patience and understanding.
The upgrade to Lighthouse Road is a $1.58 million project, with $1.04 million being contributed by Council, and $540,000 by the Australian Government through the Building Better Regions Fund.
From Wednesday 19th June 2019 Lighthouse Road from Matthew Flinders Drive to the lighthouse will be closed to allow for the planned upgrade to commence.
The upgrade will include widening and resurfacing of the road, kerb and guttering, car parking improvements, stormwater upgrades and the provision of a pedestrian footpath from Davis Crescent to the existing elevated platform, thereby improving safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
