Newport Island Road roundabout delivered

Construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Hastings River Drive and Newport Island Road is complete providing improved traffic flow and safety to this location.

Safety for motorists and access to businesses along one of our region’s busiest roads has been significantly improved, with the new roundabout at the intersection of Hastings River Drive and Newport Island Road now complete. 

The delivery of this important $2.7million project has included the installation of a new dual-lane roundabout, street lighting, improved pedestrian and cycling pathways and the upgrade of important stormwater services.

Works were completed in November 2018 and included:

  • Construction of a new concrete roundabout at the intersection of Hastings River Drive and Newport Island Road
  • Relocation of existing underground services and aboveground electrical infrastructure
  • LED streetlighting upgrades
  • Improved drainage
  • Shared path and pedestrian refuge construction
  • Landscaping

 Gordon St to Aston St - Delivered

A $6 million upgrade to Hastings River Drive was completed in June 2016 to ensure road users benefit from reduced congestion, improved traffic flow and safety improvements. Pedestrian access and safety was also seen as significantly improved.

The upgrade included:

  • Dual lanes between Gordon Streets through to Aston Street
  • New road cycleways
  • Shared footpaths and pedestrian refuges at three points
  • A new pedestrian and cycle refuge at Park Street
  • Partial widening of Garden Crescent near the intersection with Hastings River Drive
  • Lighting upgrades
  • Improved kerb and guttering
  • Improved drainage
  • New bus stops
  • Relocation of overhead power lines underground
  • Service relocations and landscaping
  • Roundabout
