Community Grant Case Studies

Port Macquarie Nature School

In June 2015 the Nature School was successful in receiving a Place Making Grant from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.

The Nature School applied for the grant with an aim to use the money to assist in funding a pilot program that would engage children between the ages of 3 years to 6 years in nature based - outdoor learning.

Children spent up to a full day outdoors, largely driving their own learning through their exploration of the environment around them. The skills they learnt included risk management, respect for each other's opinions and for nature, and how to use their imaginations.

"Thanks to the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Community Grant Program, the Nature School was able to get off the ground and up and running through the purchase of vital equipment for the nature immersion program. The Nature School program has since gained recognition around the country, has increased from two days to four, is providing volunteer and professional development opportunities for people working in the early childhood sector, but most importantly, is keeping the magic of nature alive for children attending the program now, and for those many more children to come. Thank you!"

Rhythm Review

In Round One of the 2015/2016 Community Grant Program Rhythm Review were successful in receiving a General Community Grant from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.

Rhythm Review applied for the grant with an aim to use the money to purchase the material that would allow the members of the group to make new costumes. These would then be worn when providing performances in nursing homes and respite care centres. These performances help to break down the isolation of the aged and strengthen inter-generational connections within the community.

All the costumes were made by the members of the group and through volunteer support, some costumes taking over 30 hours to prepare.

“This grant has allowed us to buy the material needed to replace and update some of our performance costumes. We really appreciate the support and recognition given to us from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council” Cecily Boys, Rhythm Review President.
